Archaeological excavations often cause uproar because of the mysteries they contain. People are often better at deciphering the past than the present in the fragments they uncover: the location of the places and the objects, the pose of the skeletons, the time frames that meet or diverge.
From above, the abstraction of layers of earth and areas of digs is often very beautiful.The tenderness with which archaeologists set to work hardly ever occurs in day-to-day life. The past is brittle and fragile, yet the present is far more vulnerable.
I express all this in very direct image languages that come together in this work and solidly connect the past and the present. I also see this work before me as a design for a mural in relief of 330 x 510 cm, made of polyester, ceramics and glass for display in a Natural History Museum, Archaeological Museum or a (life) Insurance company.
This work is one of those which I consider socially sensitive, such as “The figure of Justitia and the beautiful ghost story”.
“Archeologische opgravingen brengen veel mensen in beroering vanwege de mysteries die ze in zich hebben.
Mensen zijn vaak beter in het ontcijferen van het verleden dan van het heden in de fragmenten die ze vinden: de situering van de plaats en de objecten, de houdingen van de skeletten, de tijdvakken die samenkomen of uiteenlopen.
De abstractie van lagen aarde en vlakken van vindplaatsen van bovenaf gezien is vaak erg mooi.
De tederheid waarmee archeologen te werk gaan, komt in het dagelijks leven nauwelijks voor.
Het verleden is bros en fragiel terwijl het heden veel kwetsbaarder is.
Dit alles geef ik weer in heel directe beeldtalen die in dit werk samenkomen en het verleden met het heden solide verbinden”.
